I'm sorry, says Bolt

Published: Saturday | July 31, 2010 Comments 0

Sprint king Usain Bolt has expressed regret at not being able to represent the country at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in India, and has even apologised to the Indian public for his absence, citing poor timing as the reason behind the decision.

It was largely hoped that the reigning 100 metres and 200 metres world record holder would make an appearance at the October 3-14 Games, with some reports even claiming that the Indian authorities were prepared to shell out exorbitant amounts to try and get a commitment from the 23-year-old.

All hopes were, however, dashed when his management team, headed by coach Glen Mills and agent Ricky Simms, dismissed any chance of the double Olympic and World champion competing at the meet.

Speaking to the Times of India, Bolt said he was sorry that he would not be able to feature at the Games, and said he was looking forward to competing for his fans in that corner of the world in the near future.

"Sorry that I can't make it this time. Hope to see you in the future," said Bolt. "It would have been really nice as I haven't competed in the Commonwealth Games before but the timing was all wrong for me."

Preparing for Worlds

Bolt, who was speaking openly for the first time on the issue, explained that he is preparing to defend his titles at next year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, and his programme would be interrupted by the Commonwealth Games, which falls towards the back end of the season.

Said Bolt: "I need to get ready for the World Championships in 2011 and Olympic Games in 2012. Those two events are very important and all athletes focus on them. It is crucial that we remain in peak shape for them."

Bolt went on to underline that he never felt pressured into making a decision about his participation at the Games one way or the other and that it was left totally up to his coach and management team.

"I wouldn't say there was any pressure," said Bolt. "In fact, I wasn't thinking about it. It was up to my coach to make the decision based on what is best for my career. I am sure he made the right decision."
