THE EDITOR, Sir:
Much is being said lately about charging parents/guardians of children who are not registered for school or fail to attend school without a proper reason. What about the penalty for Govern-ment's failure to provide job opportunities for the unemployed parents of those children, although they had a high school or college education?
The number of children who leave high school or college yearly and remain unemployed is stag-gering! And it is not because they didn't attend school! It's because of the inept governance this country has had.
There are alternatives to punish-ment. Create a pilot project with one or two schools which are fully equipped with computers and CDs, or its equivalent that has all the subjects therein that the children need for learning. That would eliminate the need for children at those schools to buy or carry traditional text books to schools.
Over time, the cost for either parents or government to provide textbooks to school children would be reduced. This approach is being used globally to reduce costs on parents and government.
I am, etc.,
